ASA-SASES Meetings

The American Society of Agronomy (ASA) National Meetings are held yearly at various locations throughout the Continental US. Students in Agronomy, Soils and Environmental Sciences (SASES) is the student section of the ASA. The SASES meets twice a year both at the National Meetings in late Fall and the Regional Meetings in Mid-Spring. Both meetings provide students the opportunity to network with fellow students who become their future colleagues as well as past and present members of the ASA who carry a wealth of knowledge in the area of agronomy & soils and who become their mentors in the profession.

Students participate is various activities during the National and Regional Meetings. The activities are designed to be fun, interactive, and educational and includes such activities as a Poster Presentation Contest, Speech Contest, Quiz Bowl, Industry Tours, Banquet, Social Night, and much more. Students always have a great time!
POSTER PRESENTATION CONTEST

Displayed at the ASA-CSSA-SSSA Annual Meetings, the purpose of the poster contest is to showcase undergraduate work in club activities and to give clubs recognition for promoting agronomy, crop, soil and environmental sciences on their campus or in their local community.

Students are limited to a maximum poster size of 44.5" high by 91" wide and poster creativity ranges from computer generated posters to handmade posters such as those displayed to the right. There are a few restrictions, though, where computer display equipment, audio/projection equipment, and free standing displays are not permitted.

It's a lot of fun viewing the diverse and influential impacts that students and their clubs have on agriculture in their community and students and/or Clubs receive financial rewards for being an award winning poster, too.

For more information about the poster contest including the contest rules, visit the following website http://www.asa-cssa-sssa.org/students/contests.html.

SPEECH CONTEST
Designed to give students an idea of the value of public speaking. Contestants must prepare a five to seven minute speech on one of three topics selected approximately three hours before the final judging. They are rated on voice, physical manner, speech structure, development, language, value, and effectiveness of the speech. More information can be found at http://www.asa-cssa-sssa.org/students/contests.html.
QUIZ BOWL
The Quiz Bowl is a fun highlight for the students attending the National SASES Meetings. Teams are comprised of 4 members each with a maximum of 2 teams from each club or university. Students are eliminated on the basis of answering and responding to a wide range of agricultural questions relating to soils, crops, insects, diseases, weeds, management, etc.

Students are expected to have received the knowledge from their classroom experiences, guest seminar speakers, internship opportunities and on-the-job training.

As well you might ask, where do they get the questions for the Quiz Bowl? Well, from the students, of course!

Each student submits 5 random questions complete with answers several weeks prior to the SASES National Meetings. The Quiz Bowl Committee then randomly selects the questions during the event so these are questions and answers submitted by fellow peers and are not outlandish questions beyond the knowledge and scope of the students.

The Quiz Bowl truly is one of the highlights of the National Meetings and is looked forward to with much anticipation. It is a lot of fun for all involved.

The tours are designed to enhance students' knowledge enabling them to view agricultural principles in action. It also provides opportunity for students to view the agro-ecological impacts conducive to the many diverse environments of the American Great Plains and beyond. And, since agriculture is everywhere, the industry tours also provide opportunity for students to see its impact both in the rural and urban ways of life.

BANQUET

Both the Regional and National Banquets are wonderful social events wherein students of common interest are encouraged to interact and comingle with fellow peers thus furthering their development of communication skills and the formation of bonding relationships with future comrades of the agricultural industry.

The Banquets' social activicities include but are not limited to a meal, a dance, a motivational speaker, officer elections, club & individual award presentations/recognitions, etc.

The Banquets are all planned and hosted by students of the SASES.
